Water Resource Information Provided by NJDEP

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is the State department charged with protecting New Jersey's environment and its natural resources.  As part of its mandate, the NJDEP provides useful information regarding New Jersey's water supply.  Listed below are some of the resources that are available through the NJDEP web site.

Division of Water Supply and Geoscience

The Division of Water Supply and Geoscience is responsible for the geoscience mapping and research that one would expect to be performed by the State's  Geologist.  The Division is also responsible for Water Allocation and Well Permitting programs.

Green Infrastructure in New Jersey

The NJDEP has a web site devoted to Green Infrastructure.  What is Green Infrastructure?  Green Infrastructure refers to methods that are used to manage stormwater runoff.  Some common practices for managing runoff are cisterns, green roofs, pervious pavement, rain barrels and grass swales.

NJDEP DataMiner

The NJDEP has a huge data warehouse and makes much of the data available to New Jersey businesses and citizens.  The DataMiner tool allows users to select published reports or to enter criteria for a customized reports.

Here are some simple instructions for obtaining information about the water supply.

  • From the DataMiner homepage, click Search by Category.
  • You will be brought to another screen with a Report Category scroll box.  
  • Using the arrow to the right of the scroll box, scroll down until you see Water Supply and Geoscience.
  • Click on Water Supply and Geoscience, the click submit.
  • You will be taken to a screen that lists additional reports that you can select.

Division of Water Quality

The Division of Water Quality provides a stormwater index web site.  The web site provides stormwater management professionals and the general public with NJDEP's stormwater publications.
